International Relations Between Kazakhstan and Russia

Kazakhstan is the last Soviet country to seek its independence from the Soviet Union. Unlike most countries that have split from the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan is currently working to maintain a peaceful and civil relationship with Russia, or the former Soviet Union.

Here’s a look at some ways that Kazakhstan and Russia are working together to develop a good foreign relationship.

The Oil Pipeline

The Kazakhstan President and Russian government officials have been working together to develop an oil pipeline into and out of Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is a huge developer for oil and the ability to export and import the oil from one place to another would be very beneficial to both countries.

The pipeline agreement also works for importing gas into and out of Kazakhstan. This along with the gas imports/exports can help Kazakhstan economically.

The Russian Space Program

Russia entered into an agreement with Kazakhstan to lease a large portion of land. This land is reserved for the Russian Space Program. It is where the original first space launch occurred and where the famed Russian space station Mir was from.

This leasing of land and agreement to allow the Russian Space Program to call southern Kazakhstan home, helps both countries develop a good international relationship.

International relationships are important especially for smaller countries like Kazakhstan. The ability for Kazakhstan to develop a working relationship with Russia on the oil pipeline and the Russian Space Program, are just some of the examples of how Kazakhstan and Russia have developed a working international relationship.
